I delivered the masterclass “Algorithmic Fairness and Trustworthy AI” as part of the second edition of Encuentros por la Igualdad de Género, held at the Museo Arqueológico de Alicante (MARQ) and focused on the use of artificial intelligence in local public administration from a gender-equality perspective.

The session explored how AI systems can reproduce or amplify discrimination, especially when they are deployed in institutional and high-impact decision-making contexts. It combined technical foundations of algorithmic fairness with a broader discussion of trustworthy AI, public-sector accountability, and the social implications of automated decision-making.

The talk covered:

🧮 What is AI: dydactic and non-hype explanation of what is AI.

⚖️ Algorithmic discrimination in GenAI, decision-making and social networks: how AI systems can reproduce, conceal, or amplify social and gender inequalities.

🏛️ Public-sector AI governance: transparency, accountability, contestability, and responsible institutional adoption.

The session emphasized that trustworthy AI in government requires more than technical performance: it requires institutional responsibility, social awareness, and explicit safeguards against discrimination.

My talk, “Risks of AI Systems Beyond LLMs”, introduced students to the fact that artificial intelligence is much broader than chatbots and large language models. The session focused on how AI systems are increasingly used in consequential domains and why understanding their risks is essential.

The talk covered:

🧠 AI beyond generative models: recommendation systems, predictive models, computer vision, risk scoring, and decision-support systems.

⚖️ Bias and discrimination in decision-making: how AI systems can produce unequal impacts across social groups.

🛡️ AI risks in social platforms: how AI plays a role in visibility, polarization or radicalization of social media users.

The session formed part of a broader event designed to inspire scientific and technological vocations and to help students understand AI from an ethical, responsible, and socially beneficial perspective.
