The session combined an accessible introduction to AI with a discussion of its broader implications:

🤖 What AI is: basic intuitions behind machine learning, data, models, and prediction.

🌍 Opportunities of AI: applications in science, health, education, accessibility, sustainability, and creativity.

⚠️ Risks of AI systems: bias, discrimination, misinformation, privacy, automation errors, and overreliance on algorithmic outputs.

🧠 Critical AI literacy: how to use AI tools responsibly, question their outputs, and understand their limitations.

🔬 AI as a scientific career path: introducing students to research, university studies, and the role of science in building better technologies.

The goal of the talk was to help students move beyond using AI as a black-box tool and start thinking about how these systems are built, evaluated, and deployed in society.

My talk, “Risks of AI Systems Beyond LLMs”, introduced students to the fact that artificial intelligence is much broader than chatbots and large language models. The session focused on how AI systems are increasingly used in consequential domains and why understanding their risks is essential.

The talk covered:

🧠 AI beyond generative models: recommendation systems, predictive models, computer vision, risk scoring, and decision-support systems.

⚖️ Bias and discrimination in decision-making: how AI systems can produce unequal impacts across social groups.

🛡️ AI risks in social platforms: how AI plays a role in visibility, polarization or radicalization of social media users.

The session formed part of a broader event designed to inspire scientific and technological vocations and to help students understand AI from an ethical, responsible, and socially beneficial perspective.
